Actually, the Gulf, Mobile & Northern and Mobile & Ohio merged in 1940 to 
create the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio. The Alton was absorbed by the GM&O in 1947.
(This gave the GM&O access to Chicago, which I suspect diminished interline 
traffic with the CB&Q.)

You must be referring to the Gulf, Mobile, and Northern. That is the
predecessor railroad to the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio. The Alton and the
GM&N merged  in 1947.
