Where I worked on the former CB&Q dark territory in Wyoming in mid 1970s some 
of the sidings had spring switches on one end and yard leads had a spring 
switch. In all of these cases there was a Distant signal that was an  upper 
quadrant semaphore that could show only vertical Green or 45 degree Yellow. At 
the siding's spring switch there was an upper quadrant semaphore that could 
show only vertical Green or horizontal Red depending upon whether the spring 
switch points were properly seated or not for facing point mainline movement. 
These spring switches had no point locks so there was no signal for trail-thru 
movement off the siding.
