Thread-topic: [CBQ] Class F-1 0-8-0 Paint question

Hol had the answer. For modelers, the best approach is to paint the cab roof oxide and weather it heavily with dark gray and black, leaving the hint of oxide I saw on 543. Of course if the engine was newly painted, and that’s what a modeler wants to represent – shine black paint and oxide red cab roof with light weathering, of course that’s prototypical. As a modeler, I start with the fresh paint appearance and weather according to the age of paint I want. That may include semi-gloss or flat finish, various degrees of paint fade and oxidation, and various colors of soot, grime, dust, dirt, rust, oil and grease, for reefers ice and salt residues, and for stock cars lime and steam cleaning effects. I always work from color photos whenever possible.

Nelson - IF the cab roofs had been painted red oxide, then they were quickly covered with a deep level of coal soot and grime remaining that way to the scrap yard. They look "black" to me, but I can't definitely say one way of the other - Louis
