The original no.35 was renumbered 635 in 1898, 49 in 1904 and then rebuilt as
an A2 4-4-0 in 1916 and renumbered to 399. It was retired in March, 1929. The
no. 35 at the Patee Museum is a stand in. It was built at Aurora in 1892 and
numbered 66. In 1898, it was renumbered 666 and then in 1904, 359. It was
retired in 1932 and then sent to Denver Shops to be rebuilt as a replica of the
original no. 35 for the 1933 - 1934 Century of Progress in Chicago. In 1939
-1940 and again in 1948 - 1949, it was leased out to represent Union Pacific
119, one of the Golden Spike locomotives, at the New York Worlds Fair and then
the Chicago Railroad Fair. I believe at the RR Fair, it was under steam.
The mail car at the Patee Museum is also a stand in rebuilt in 1934 from H&ST.J
no. 42. In subsequent years before being rebuilt to replicate the “first’ mail
car, it was renumbered several times. Information concerning the mail car can
be found in BRHS Bulletin No. 8.
