As Ken stated drywall is sold in 48 inch wide sheets. Lengths available are 96, 108, 120, 144, 168 and 192 inches long. To the best of my knowledge 54 inch wide sheets are only sold in 144 inch lengths.

Unit are shipped with 4x4 sleepers made from foam or drywall rips stacked high enough to provide clearance for a forklift tine, and bands are strapped around the unit with corner protectors. rarely are there any type of spacers to protect the ends or edges. most suppliers know that if the sheets are damaged they will be rejected by the customer. In 45 years as a contractor I do not ever remember taking a picture of a unit of drywall.

When shipped by truck or by rail the units are usually wrapped in clear plastic and depending on the distributors order may be loaded with any combination of lengths on one load. On trucks they are rarely loaded more than 3 units high except for very short local deliveries.

I sent a copy of this page to someone at the Burlington Junction who actually loads these cars and will post his answer when I get it.  Not all wallboard is 48" wide anymore.  They are also shipping 54" wide wallboard and the lengths are usually 8' or 12'.  Nine foot ceilings are popular now and have changed things.
