Looking for somewhere to take the kids/grandkids this weekend ? The Kendall
County Historical Society's Fall Festival will be going on from 10:00 AM TO
4:PM on Sat. and Sunday.
The BRHS has several volunteers who will be manning the 1953 original Q Plano
depot and the 1918 Aurora built class NE9 waycar 13818 at Lyon Farm located
between Oswego and Yorkville,IL on Rte.71.
Last weekend a number of BRHS members used lots of elbow grease to make the
13818 probably the cleanest wood waycar still in existence. Definitely cleaner
than when it was in service. Bryan Smith washed its windows, graphited the
couplers, replaced the fuses in the racks with fresh ones and much more. Jim
Davidson dusted everywhere in the waycar, I was actually wondering if this
might be the first time the car was dusted.
The waycar actually has train orders and forms in the desk from when it was in
service.
I'm bringing a pair of BR markers to hang on her. We may even have a working
backup whistle !
The depot was swept,vacuumed,mopped,windows washed and much more. Its full of
period artifacts from when in service. Jon Habbeger washed windows and
explained to us the mail clerks test kit resting on a cabinet with US mail dept
routings.watch for a photo in an upcoming Zephyr. There's even a photo of
member Dan Hollenback working a broom around the depot.
If you think the position of BRHS president is glamorous, watch a future Zephyr
where he's working a weed wacker around the depot foundation on a 90 degree day.
The Q Locomotive bell was graphited during the work session and works pretty
much like when it was mounted on a loco. Come pull the rope and listen to its
music.
There will be a display of LCL boxes and milk/cream cans on the freight
platform.
There will be much more going on. Last Sat. We watched the KCHS members move
their collection of antique farm equipment out of storage buildings. There's a
Case steam farm loco., a John Deere crawler, many antique tractors,wagons and
much more. There will be live demos of threshing and other farm activities. All
the antique buildings will be open. Ever been in a real General store ?
On Sunday there's also a, classic car show.
The BRHS company store will be setup in the depot.
