Jon
I would say the sheep and feeder cattle would come in from the west in the fall to be fed on the stalk fields for spring markets.
The fall was always the busy time at the Montgomery Stockyard.   There was a sheep feeder operation at them at least thru the fall of '69 when I went off to the service.  When I worked at Aurora Tower in the fall of '73 I had a train come in off the C&I that was too long to fit and set two loads of calves on the Sheep Yard Lead so I had them set them on a depot track at the east end of the plant and then when the switch engine came up from the Hill Yard he just ran in on them and out the west end to the stock yard.
Attached is tower board from Aurora the Hill Yard was off the bottom left east of the depot.  The stock yard lead was the middle track on the right with the top two the Main Line from Galesburg with the two bottom tracks the C&I Siding then Main and the middle track of the five the stock yard lead.
If any one is out and about I will be giving my revised Train Dispatcher talk at the Savannah(Ga.) RPM April Fools Day

Thank you Leo for a great talk this evening (March 23rd) at Waubonsee's downtown Aurora campus.   My wife, our neighbor, and I enjoyed the evening.

Our neighbor enjoyed hearing about Aurora back in the 30s and 40s.  She has told us stories about her father driving sheep from the Burlington siding in Big Rock, Illinois to their farm about 2 miles away.  When asked if their sheep came from Montgomery, she told us she was not sure and wished she had asked questions back then.

She also has told us of going trackside in Big Rock to watch the new Zephyr come through with her elementary school class.  Obviously this must have been the Twin Cities Zephyr.

This was a very enjoyable evening.
