I guess it's a toss up, I find it easier to release them on the nose then fiddle around the in the cab when walking through power.....now days we don't have many engines that still have brakes up front and the trend has gone to push button brakes.

C&S SD40's had the hand brake on the rear, later models had them on the short nose "normally" on the left side.  A lot if not most models the hand brake only worked on the rear truck.   Later models with the brake up front, it only works on the front truck. Quicker ? and easier for the engine crew to set the brake (maybe?)./

All,

Perhaps some one could shed some light on this subject, I'm going to paint some C&S SD40'S and I noticed they have a stand brake on the long hood. So my question is why? What benefits does having the brake on the rear like that vs the nose on a standard cab engine?

On the prototype I understand why because the lack of space on a North American cab.

Thanks
Tristan
