Thread-topic: Engineer in photo of GP30 No. 949
Make that "most" engineers knew the spot. There were others, however....

Like K Houston, who didn't seem to care about the concept of bunched/push
eastbound, stretch/pull westbound gave the people a better ride and didn't
spill their coffee. And tailhosing backups were always an adventure :)

My "favotite" experience with Izzy: I think it was 1973. I was a relatively new
suburban brakeman. At that time we tailhose-backup everything. From 14th. St.
‎Most of the time you never had to crack the valve - the engine crew knew their
spot and just drifted down the CUS platform and stopped stretched with their
independent.

The two Izzys were up front. And down the track we rocketed. Not being all that
experienced, it took me awhile for the light to come on and open the valve
full‎. The closest I ever wanted to get to the post.

The conductor (don't remember well but I think it was Metz) walked out a while
later, took a look at the spot and just raised an eyebrow........

Based on the cleanliness of the entire engine consist, I would say this had to
be the return trip of their maiden voyage to Daytons Bluff. They never looked
so clean afterwards. 949 & 951 both have a builder's date of May, 1962 so I
would go with that date. The story goes that engineer Henry J. Groesch ("Izzy"
aka, "Isadore") was given a message (signed by Aurora RFE McPherson) at Savanna
Yard, informing engineer Groesch that the PR Department photographer(s) would
be in the vicinity of Naperville to shoot publicity photos of his brand new
locomotives and that engineer Groesch was to keep his blankety-blank "mug"
inside the cab while passing their location. You see the end result. The RFE
forgot to mention, "without fail" in the message. Volumes could be written
about "Izzy" and his son, Lawrence L. Groesch (no Jr.) aka "Lil' Izzy".
Legends.
