When I worked for Halliburton (1969) we received sand from Weldon in covered hopper cars (mostly HWCX, Halliburton company cars) as well as bagged sand in boxcars. The bagged sand(we called it "sacked sand") was a pain! Of coarse, hydraulic fracturing  wasn't the big deal, it is today.

Pat,

1)  Wording problem on my part:  Bagged sand shipped in boxcars.  Loose sand shipped in gons.

2)  I have a couple of NYC waybills from 1950 showing gons going from Wedron to Marion, Ind. to Marion Machine Fdry & Sup Co.  One of them is in CM&O 89089 showing "C/L SILICA SAND NOT GROUND" and "<OPEN CAR CONTENTS COVERED WITH TAR PAPER>".

I do not know the reasons or uses for this, but the waybill shows it happened.

A booklet published by Ottawa Silica lists many uses for their sand including toothpaste.  An MKT waybill shows sand going to Halliburton in Cushing, Ok.
