Group - The attached image shows CB&Q Class G-8 0-6-0 type
No. 1710 at Galesburg, IL, on May 22, 1938. Note the unusual
winged headlight. At first glance, I thought the image had been retouched
with the headlight partially painted out, but look at the back-up light. It's
the same.... Never seen another winged headlight light quite like this
one.
According to the Corbin book, 1710 was built in 1901 at the West
Burlington, IA, Shops. It was a Class R-2 2-6-2 type locomotive and
the first of its series. It was rebuilt in 1918 at West Burlington as
an 0-6-0 type and kept its original road number. 1710 became part of the
World War Two effort when it was sold to the US Government in July 1941.
