[CBQ] Light? at end of NE12 caboose

I am modifying one of the Bachmann cabooses into one of the NE12 steel cabooses.
Above the end platforms, under the end of the roof walk there is a fixture that 
appears to be a light.
The “lens" is red in the photos I have seen.
Is this in fact a light, or some other warning device?
How and when was it used?
There also seems to be a light fixture in the upper corners of the end walls.
Were these active, and used for what?
