I’ll take a stab at this. I think Gothic refers to your usual heavyweight clerestory passenger car. Betterment cars usually had streamlined roof, thermopane (sealed) windows, and even roller bearings for the higher top speeds more modern cars were designed for.

in researching heavyweight passenger cars i found several Pullman sites----one refered to Gothic and Betterment cars---Pullman plan 2522-7c2d-1910/1912-gothic[body]--what is Gothic body as to other body styles---any good reference photos?---thanks Jim Young
