This book is a collection of 286 photographs taken during the final years of
steam locomotives in regular service on 18 railroads in America. The book
contains about 50/50 full color and black-and-white photographs. All but five
have never been published before.
“Photographed and authored by Burt Mall, with a supporting cast of many
including the late Bill Raia, the book might be a last fresh look at what much
of our population, several generations back, saw as a picture of industrial
America. The photographs with only 3 exceptions portray steam in regular
service and not excursions.
This book has 296 pages and is well indexed with 2 indices, one by railroad
and locomotive and one by site and location of the photograph.”
In my opinion the book is very well done and not a disappointment like the
recent depot book and will make a nice addition to your library. I’d guess
about 30-35% of the book captures Burlington subjects.
