I don't remember the date other that early 70's. I saw two freights arrive
each with 5 E-7's. I think they quickly cut off grabbed the outbound cut and
departed That was 40+years ago, no memory works good that long. Have some
2-1/4 inch prints of both trains. That much weight in one place should have
caused Nebraska to lean eastward. .......................CY

Thanks Randy, I’m not 100% positive but I think the turntable was removed by
the time of this photo. I think I remember someone telling me that the
turntable was removed by the late 50’s. My grandfather worked at Ferry from
the early 40’s up until the merger when they moved everything to the GN yards
in Sioux City. I have attached a couple of aerial photos I acquired from the
local Chamber office. I assume that these photos are the early to mid 70’s era
as the yard office and some of the other buildings are gone and the transfer
power is sitting there. These photos show the roundhouse without the turntable
but give a good view of track layout of the facilities area of the yard. You
can clearly see the motors sitting on the old boiler house track and you can
see the outbound track clearly coming out of the #1 roundhouse stall. You can
see the RIP track coming off left of the outbound. I was fortunate enough to
have my grandfather make me a map with all track names and facility locations
before he passed. In the photo there are 2 cars sitting on the RIP track, a
long string of cars sitting on the outbound track and another long string of
cars sitting on the old waycar track which sits between the Main line on the
left and the “New”Main on the right in the photo. I also attached a photo of
the north side of the roundhouse & South end of the yards which shows the
O’Neil Line Wye.

Scott, it is a pretty late photo (April 1966) but the high-resolution
image 1SWAR00030258.tif on the earthexplorer.usgs.gov website shows
the track arrangement and surrounding buildings fairly well:

http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/metadata/4660/AR1SWAR00030258/

You need to register with the website (free, and minimal information
given up) to download it.

The roundhouse is still in place but the sun angle seems to be
obscuring the turntable.
