Time frames for the MTZ:
The Advanced Denver service began on May 31, 1936 and continued until the
permanent Denver Zephyr equipment was placed into service on November 8 that
year.
According to J.D. Christen, the train-set was soon reassigned once again, this
time to the run between St. Louis and Kansas City. This apparently lasted from
February 9, 1937 (BRHS 1984 Calendar) until sometime in the fall of that year.
This report is confirmed by the fact that the public timetable from the summer
of 1937 bears a notation that the MTZ was temporarily assigned to other
service, while the fall public timetable indicates that the MTZ is back in
service on the K-line once again.
On September 25, 1938, it was assigned once again to the St. Louis to Kansas
City route. There it served along with sister #9902 as trains #32 and #33.
#9900 was assigned once again to cover the run along the west side of the
Mississippi, for which it was apparently loaned #9903's baggage car once more.
When the General Pershing Zephyr took over the cross-Missouri route on April
30, 1939, #9903 stayed as the companion of #9908 for the next three years,
while #9902 was reassigned as the Texas Rocket, beginning service on June 15.

That is a great photo, Eric, but the MTZ is not quite new. The
sloping vents on the engine room roof weren't added until sometime
after June 1936 (the date of the last dated photo I have seen without
the vents)
