As FYI, as roller bearings came into the industry it was allowable to use a
standard friction bearing side frame (cover,etc) with a roller bearing axle and
adaptors. This practice continued until 1992 when the AAR Field Manual of
Interchange Rules outlawed "converted sideframes".
Why do I remember this so clearly; because I had to deal with cars caught in
interchange beyond the time limit. My
most vibrant memory is a car that went thru the UTLX shop in Cleveland,TX In
the late 80s/early 90s and received standard trucks with the roller bearings.
The car went on lease in Mexican service. It came back to Cleveland sometime
around 1998 and the shop wrote the car up on their repair estimate to replace
converted sideframes. I dutifully questioned the write up supervisor as the
property ledger showed the car converted to standard sideframes in the early
90s.
Old Leon,he and I understood each other clearly, said Leo the car has converted
sideframes , the Mexicans switched them back. I said OK Leon. Prep the car for
scrap only as I ain't going to pay for the conversion again.
