"Inspection Motors"

In the "early days" ...before the "Hy Rail" idea came along these cars had just the regular wheels replaced by flanged wheels, thus they could not be removed from the track...Hence they were operated as "Extras"...ie   "Extra Inspection Motor 586 East"   They were considered as any other train...

In the "latter" days after the Hy Rail equipment was added some railroads operated these cars via  "lineups"...Just like an section crew MOTOR CAR.  Some continued to operate the "inspection motors as "Extra Trains" even after Hy Rail equipment was added.

One of the Burlington Bulletins a few years ago had a feature article on these "Inspection Motors"...I could go downstairs and find my copy of said BB, but I'll let somebody else do that.

Pete

Interesting discussion on motor cars.

If the little 4 wheel, often open were called "motor cars", and the self propelled passenger carrying cars were "passenger motor cars", what were the converted/hirail automobiles called?
