Diesels weren't called motor cars, they were simply motors.  And on the Q there was never any confusion between the two types of motor cars because the larger gas-electrics were always passenger motor cars or PMCs.

Subject: [CBQ] Terminology

The term “motor car” has been referred to quite extensively over the last week or so in relation to diesels locomotives, gas-electrics and motorised hand cars.  Did using the same term for three comparatively different pieces of equipment cause problems?
