Bill and List,

Thanks for the interesting summary below.  The only thing I would add, RE the car on the PRR, is that it moved
around between several different trains over the years, and in the last year & 1/2 of operation (April 1956 - October 1957) was in, successively, the New York section of the "Liberty Ltd." (Nos. 58 & 59), the "General" (Nos. 48 and 49), and finally the all-Pullman "Broadway Ltd." (Nos. 28 & 29).

I'm assuming the NYC line ended at the same time as the PRR's?  (10/26/57)

Rich, Bill and others,

The NYC contribution to the CZ was, indeed, a leased CZ 10-6 sleeper owned by WP. The PRR owned car was the Silver Rapids and was also a 10-6 sleeper. PRR initials were on the owner plate at the end of the car. (Silver Rapids still exists). From information that I have found, the service to New York City alternated, NYC one day, PRR the next. Since the Silver Rapids was in pool service, it was not always the car going to New York City. Obviously, one car could not cover the service every other day. The CZ car designation for was CZ11 for through service to New York City. Eastbound, the car arrived at Chicago in the afternoon and was switched to evening PRR train no. 42 out of Union Station one day and and evening NYC train no. 22 out of La Salle Street station the next day. Westbound, the procedure was reversed. The New York City car would arrive in the morning on PRR train no. 23 one day and the morning NYC train no. 19 the next day. The New York City cars were never operated on the premier trains of either eastern RR.  In 1949, a roomette from San Francisco to NYC was $35.20. If it will transmit, here is a sample D&RGW timetable from June, 1949 showing the schedule and the car assignments.
