Here's the one view of the Chinese red GS-6 gondolas that I can find right now.  It shows a car retired and waiting to be scrapped at the Q's West Eola reclamation plant.  The car is stenciled for Coke loading and has the side extension to increase its capacity.

Rupert and Anthony:

I have photos of two GS-6 gons in Chinese red, so it's not just a theoretical possibility; the remaining cars underwent a shopping program around the time of the change to Chinese red in 1958-59 and thus were painted in the new color scheme.  They also had an extension of less than a foot added added to the top of their sides to increase their capacity, this apparently done when they were assigned to coke service (not Coke but the high energy fuel made from coal).

Anthony

I’ll send you a couple of photos of  XA-15A’s (the XA-15B had end doors)  so that you can compare it to your box car. They were built in 1941 and there were still some on the roster in 1970 when BN was formed.  I don’t know how much longer they lasted.

I’ll also send you a photo of a GS-6 gondola to compare with your one. They were built in 1929 numbered 81000-81499 and lasted until 1967. It is the only class of steel gondola which was about that size (although somewhat different in appearance) and which survived post-war, and theoretically be painted in the Chinese red paint scheme which was first used in about 1958.

I'm not too concerned with the road numbers on an N scale model or any scale really. I can barely see them anyway on the N scale. What I am concerned with is years they ran and looks of the cars matching real ones.

I regret to advise you that these are not exactly accurate CB&Q models. The number 48383 on the box car was last used between 1933 and 1940 on a rebuilt XA-6 auto box car. Maybe change the number to 48583 which was allocated to a XA-15B (it looked similar) between 1941 and 1970, and into the BN era.

The gondola car E3141 looks like the Bachman 42’ model.  The Burlington didn’t use letters before road numbers and I can’t think of any CB&Q steel gondolas that were similar to the model. I bought this same model about 35 years ago when I started collecting Burlington equipment. I ended up repainting it orange as MoW equipment, representing a foreign car that was rebuilt after being written off in a wreck.

But it is your train on your layout so if they look good to you, that is the only criteria.
