There wrong for any E type loco after phas I E7s. Intremountain part is
44081 A unit Passenger pilot. Some modification is needed to mount it, and a
mod to the opening to get the sheet metal shape. If BLI will supply the F3
pilot, it should go right on, and still have to fill the opening to get the
sheet metal correct. That of course is if you are not going to put the clam
shell covers on. But getting things from them...good luck.

Gordon,

Are you saying that the existing pilot on the most recent run, is wrong for
the CB&Q E8's? Does the Intermountain F3 Passenger Pilot have the correct
opening for CB&Q E8's? If so, I may go that route, rather than trying to
work with BLI to get the parts, do you have a part number that you ordered
by any chance?

The issue is going to be matching the paint.

James

This run of the HO E8s comes with only one pilot. And this time they GLUED
it on. You'll have to open the pilot yourself for a coupler. And as long as
we're on the subject of pilots, BLI has put the wrong passenger pilot on all
the phase II E7s, E8s and E9s. They keep using the raked phase I E7 (small
number boards) pilot. I've called them several times in the past about it
and they don't seem to care. They put the correct pilot on the F3s a few
years back, why can't they do it rite?? And they sure butchered the last run
of phase II E7, by using the wrong shell and a botched paint job. They knew
they were wrong but ran them anyway. I get the Intermountain F3 passenger
pilots and refit them to all my units.

You guys don’t mention the scale (BLI/PCM did E units in both HO and N) but
since the most recent run that just hit the market is HO….

…..the pilot on the HO E8/9 is separate. IIRC they did not mold a Enclosed
(“passenger”) Pilot with the doors open or removed, so have to package a
Open (“freight”) Pilot to allow the use of a coupler for trailing or
Elephant style lash ups. I don’t know if there are any spare pilots
available that would work for an open Enclosed pilot; LifeLike would be a
candidate but their parts situation is bad. I-M molds the pilots with the
body shell; not sure of how Athearn units are built.

The E7 and E8 pilots should interchange.

Scott,

Looking at the prior runs of E8's painted in CB&Q, they came with the
enclosed pilots too, so perhaps it seems that the E8's had enclosed only. I
can't say for sure if these were operable or not, but I assume that they're
the same. I don't have any spare parts for an open pilot.

I can't see how these detach, is it a press fit that's glued? I'll take a
more thorough look at these tonight.

Is the pilot on an E7 and E8 the same?

If I remember correctly on my first gen E7 for BLI, it came with two pilots.
And it separated at the sill plate, where it is painted red.

Hope this helps,

James,
I have one of the first of the E7s they produced at it came with the pilot
open and front coupler installed.
I can check whether the pilot was molded as part of the body.
If you can get the pilot off, maybe an E7 one could be swapped in.

Hi All,

I received two CB&Q E8's from the latest release of E Units from
Broadway Limited for a customer. The customer asked for me to program
them and change the couplers to Kadee's (If they weren't fitted with
Kadee's from the factory, which they're not by the way), before sending
them on to him.

As I took the first one out of it's box, I noticed that it has the
closed passenger pilot on the front of it and it looks really nice.
Looking behind the pilot, I noticed that the pilot seems to be cast as
part of the body, and that the coupler covers, are molded as part of the
pilot, they don't seem to be operable.

I checked the other unit and it's the same.

There's no way to open them or set these units up for double heading.
They don't even come with a coupler box for the front of the locomotive,
even though the frame mounting point is there.

Is this truly the case, or am I not looking at this correctly? I don't
see anything in the manual or paperwork that comes with them about
opening them up, and I don't see any extra parts in the boxes, so I'm
trying to figure out what I should be doing next for the customer, as he
was planning on double heading these units.

Were previous runs of E8's setup the same way from Broadway? These are
the first units that I've handled in person from Broadway Limited and
the detailing is nice but this is kind of an issue.

Any comments.

James
