Jan
Another good one was handing up to dinkys .  At Eola when the dinkys most all tied up at Aurora and would get their orders in a large box on one of the canopy pillars.  But there were IF I remember right 7 that went direct to the Hill Yard down the lead at West Eola. So in the morning those 7 IF there were orders the Operator at Eola would have to deliver.  There was a train order signal just before you got to the main at Farnsworth coming off the at the time single track lead to the Hill Yard.  So you would have to turn on the train order signal and then be ready to hand up the orders.  Hopefully there was not anything on the Running Track(right next to main 3)(( and remember when the Yard Office was out near the middle of the yard and on the South Side))  So you would get the orders ready in the hoops you needed three for the Head End,  Middle and Tail end.  In a nice January morning with plenty of the white stuff laying all about here come the first dinky in a swearl of snow Where is the Fireman??  and as he goes by and grabs the orders you are now standing in a blinding snow storm and Where is the Middle man???  And the Tail End????  you just held them up and hoped they caught them.  And some times there was no one there to catch them and you took them and at least 5 pounds of snow that went down your back as there was no way to keep it out of going down your neck no matter how you bundled up and tied a scarf around your neck
And that was a long time ago now
Steve in SC
