Ken -

It's time to re-wire your E-5.  What you "thought you heard" is wrong; the red 
Mars light does NOT come on automatically in reverse, unless, while backing, 
the brake system is put in "emergency" and the circuit breaker to the "Signal 
Light" is closed. Normal "backing" of a locomotive would not cause the red Mars 
light to turn on (on CB&Q locomotives).
