I would think the Q in Wyo. was perfectly suited to what it was handling in the 
1960s. The comments I've heard from the NP to BN civil engineers is that core 
system -- the heavy duty railroad away from the far edges of its empire, was in 
rough shape come merger. The Q did go through two administrations in short 
order in the 1965-70 period. I've asked my friend for some further comment but 
he seems to be of the opinion it's all water under the scoria now.

As an aside to that, didn't Harry Murphy die very shortly after he retired 
(within 18 months or so)?
