Maybe they are somehow integral to the truck assembly? If they weren’t there, things wouldn’t “sit right”?

 

Just an uneducated guess on my part remembering how much Grainger laid out to restore it and seeing what MSI had to do to get it in place.

I was at MSI a few years ago and  noticed that the power truck still has traction motors.   Interesting since the train would not be operated ever again.   Thats a lot of weight to lower to the display location that will not be used.

While on the subject of the Pioneer Zephyr and Winton engines:

Does anyone know the dimensions on the Winton engine and generator?

What traction motors were used in the Pioneer Zephyr? Were they ever upgraded to a later model, like a D57, or even later EMD traction motor?

I did check BB #43 on the 9900 but could not find the info.
