John -
Bill Glick's 'Passenger Car Roster' book has complete info on dates of
construction and retirement of these cars. As a general statement, both classes
were very diverse in origin (builders), and most cars were built circa the
1880s-90s.
Regarding their service, yes, they were used in mixed trains on branch lines. I
believe some also were used as drovers' cabooses on cattle trains.
