[CBQ] CB&Q RPO #1938

Baggage-Mail #1938 wore its revenue Q passenger green and ribbon lettering into 
the 1990's. I caught up with it when used for paint storage at Oxford, NE in 
1986, parked on an old turntable spur. Much of the interior was gone and had a 
concrete floor, but outside was original. As an attendant at the Galesburg 
Railroad Museum (but in process of a move to Denver), I forwarded info on the 
1938 to our board as we were searching for a RPO. 

Our contact at BN could not locate the car in inventory as #1938, it had no M-W 
number and without an inventory record, the museum could not acquire it (which 
proved to be recorded as a building, not rolling stock).  In the delay, the GRM 
board purchased sister #1945 from the National Railroad Museum of  Green Bay, 
WI. As with the #1938, the #1945 was still in weathered, orignal Q green paint 
and ribbon lettering, but had its windows covered and interior intact. 
Heavyweight MA-11 mailcars #2330 and 2337 plus baggage #1580 were with the 
#1945 at Green Bay, a complete 'Fast Mail'.  On delivery to Galesburg in March, 
1987, a  local signpainter  created stencils by tracing existing lettering 
before repainting and placement behind Hudson #3006.  The proposals for #1938 
were obviously dropped. A few years later while raifanning early 1990's , I 
found the 1938 again, still not repainted and used for storage at Fremont, NE 
for new owner, Fremont and Elkhorn Valley tourist railway/dinner train but on 
my next visit to Fremont, it had been finally been repainted in maroon as 
remarked by others on the list.
