Ken,
If the bridge is fabricated from Weathering steel, best known under the
trademark as Cor-tan steel it won't be painted. It will be left to
weather (rust) which apparently provides a protective coating.
There was an accident at Congress Park back in 79 or 80 which took out the
bridge(s)over the IHB. The new bridges were fabricated from Cor-tan.
Later while working in the system engineering office, I asked the Chief
Engineer
of Bridges when they were going to paint that bridge.
He said "I better not catch someone painting that bridge".
