Welcome aboard!  Hopefully you gathered enough memories, photos, resource 
material, etc while in Illinois to do your modeling in Germany.  Back in the 
CB&Q His. Soc. days, we had a mbr make some plastic castings HO scale Q 
milepost markers which he sold at a VERY inexpensive price just to mbrs.  I 
think he may also have offered them in N (but not in Z).  I've forgotten his 
name (any old mbrs recall?)

In any case, in Z they will be quite small although in real life (a few can 
still be found in isolated areas) they were tall & very noticeable!
