The thread on old RR hotels has been very interesting. It is a reminder of a
bygone era before the chain motels took over the country. The old hotels didn't
have most of the things that modern motels offer - air conditioning, swimming
pools, etc, but they offered other things that the chains don't offer - charm,
steam engine smoke, etc. Last year one of the model railroad magazines had an
article on old hotels out west and the adventure of staying in most - heating
bricks to warm beds, using slop jars, in house restaurants, etc.
Here in the small town of Elsberry, MO there used to be a hotel that used to
sit across the street from the Burlington depot. I don't know if many railroad
people stayed there, but it probably served Q passengers. It closed in the
1960s
and torn down. It went by a variety of names over the decades - City Hotel,
Reid
Hotel, etc.
