Peavine and/or pumpkin vine was a common term used by many RR's for meandering
lines with branches.
In this case, it's CB&Q's lines as mentioned in the review, running between the
Chi to Denver and Chi to Twin Cities mains, running from Mendota and Galesburg
to the Savannah area.

Not sure if this is the same line you were thinking of but the C&NW had a line
from Belle Plaine, IA to Consol, IA that was referred to as the Pumpkin Vine.
It crossed the CB&Q at Stark, IA
