Hol Wagner mentions the "Night Crawler" in his book *The Colorado Road, *as
it was a C&S train, no. 29-30, which operated until Sept 2, 1967. I am
aware of it because I went to Colorado State University in Fort Collins
1963-1967. I looked into riding it into Denver during my freshman year,
but you had to catch it in Fort Collins at "oh-dark thirty" It normally
had one or two Q E7A units on the point and used HW cars, usually a couple -
or more - of HW baggage or mail cars and a HW coach. The only C&S E units
were E5s, and they were almost never used on the 29-30. It was a scheduled
passenger train,but it handled mostly mail and LCL north of Denver. It
traveled through northern Colorado at night and that attracted few
passengers. Hol has several B&W photos of unusually long consists, and Al
Holck in *Burlington Route, Color Pictorial, Vol 1, *has a TT of 29-30,
arriving Fort Collins at 5:23 am. He also has a photo of one of the last
trains with a Q E8A.
Al mentions that with the sparse population of Montana and Wyoming, an
overnight mail train was more than sufficient.
