That style of cab vent was used on virtualy all of the Q's steam engines. The
entire hatch could be rasied about six inches. I've never seen a picture where
only the front of the vent was raised, so I'd say it wasn't possible.
Here's a link to a picture from the Denver Public library showing the vent in
it's raised posistion. It's not the clearest picture, but it's the only one of
an M4 I can find on the web right now.
