Please find a copy of BRHS Bulletin 1 entitled" The Dinkies in Transition"
as it will provide some details.
Here's a quick response. Suburban trains carried baggage cars to handle
newspapers, company material and company mail, etc There were also REA cars
going to Aurora and other stations.
In the Aurora lodge BRT/UTU files in my possesion there is proof of a xmas
time where a solid extra train made roundtrips between Aurora and Chicago
handling express and parcels, etc. I hope someday to share that as an
article in one of the BRHS pubs.
Also in those files are bid sheets for suburban jobs showing trains with 2
or more baggage cars and set outs and pick ups in route. Some were working
cars and some were storage cars.
There was even a car for bread out of Pepperidge Farm.
Then of course there was the wheel car which is pretty unique ;used for
loco wheels between Aurora and 14th st.
Ever see a photo of a dinkie w/Zephyr cars deadheading to the Aurora shops?
How about the Sunday night westbound train with several diesels lashed
together elephant style ?
Leo
