Just a general question for someone to have a stab at answering...when
railroads were abandoned here in the US why were trestles cut down and not left
in situ ? Was it a liability issue or were the materials that valuable.
In some cases Mike the bridges and trestles were removed and re-used at another
location. There are some bridges on the former BN and other railroads that have
been taken down and rebuilt in a different state i.e. moved from a branchline
that has lost all business say in the middle of Montana and moved to a location
say in Iowa. The "bridge movings" were done by "predacessor roads". Liability
is also the reason for removal.
