Dustin -

By the Doodlebug; short passenger train, viz., RPO, baggage or express
combine, one or two coaches; the there is the mixed train. The former
"MILW" had some really sharp open-ended combination cars for these
"Prairie Express" trains.

Sadly, the Granger railroads did not use their trucking subsidary's to
substitute for the haulage of mail and express. There were making too
much money transporting L-T-L shipments, even with "The Key Point
Restrictions." Further, this business was former L-C-L shipments moving
in box cars and peddler cars on local freights at "much lower" freight rates.

Get a couple of Official Railway Guides of the late 40's, 50's and early 60's
to reviw and you will see the amount of services offered.

Fyi,

As some you may know I'm currently in the planning/building atage of my 50's Q
& Milw layout.I'm modeling a fake branchline but with prototypical pratices. In
the 1950's would the mail in these town be handled by truck or by the local
doodlebug?
