Driving wheels slipping on axles:
All drivers will need to be re-quartered, those slipping as well as
those not. When the drivers were originally "quartered" the only
requirement was that they all be quartered to the exact same degree.
Very commonly, that "degree" was not an exact 90º, but something less
or more- 80º-110º. Inasmuch as we cannot (normally) observe both
sides of the locomotive at the same time, this license is almost never
apparent, and because we are not actually "steaming" this of course
has no effect on operation.
1) Using a quartering tool (NWSL has several choices) to reposition
the slipping wheels on the axles, reset the wheels on the axles using
RED Loctite, making certain that the wheels are square, and the gauge
is exact.
2) The check all of driving wheel sets with the quartering tool. . If
you are extremely lucky (it happens) the other drivers may be already
squarely in the same "quarter". If not, pull off a wheel and reset it
to what the quartering tool requires.
It would be unusual to require new drivers, when the means for a
current fix are available. I have had to this type of quartering reset
a relatively large number of times over the years with brass steam
locomotives, primarily to up grade gear boxes, but also occasionally
for loose driving wheels.
