Jerry Lundeen and I frequently talk about railroad operations in his hometown
of Moline--and the Quad Cities in general--and we have a couple of questions
about how the yards at Barstow functioned.
Mike Spoor in Vol. 4 of his series of books states that train #69 originated in
Clyde and terminated at Barstow where it set out and picked up, returning to
Clyde after the mandatory rest period. This struck us, as non-professionals, as
odd since four trains passed Barstow daily on the Savanna/Galesburg line.
Secondly, outside of being the place for setouts and pickups, was Barstow
primarily a place to block cars for setouts at East Moline, Moline, Rock Island
and Davenport?
Would the pros care to wade in (Leo, Steve Russ et al)?
We also have a followup question about interchange traffic based on a perusal
of the Copeland report that the BRHS sent awhile back, but first, to Barstow.
Thanks,
Bob Herrick
