The Burlington's fifteen O4 Class 2-8-2 heavy Mikados were built in
1919 by Baldwin. Originally they were all sent to Galesburg to work
in
the Creston Division. In 1923 eight were moved to the Casper
division
where they were converted to oil burners. By the end of 1931 all the
others had also been converted. Eventually the "Q" sold them off to
the C&S and the FW&D. They were finally scrapped in 1960. There are
two photos of 2-8-2's # 5506
and #5509 on page 29 in Al Holck's Vol 1 Burlington Route Color
Pictorial. The photos were taken in 1957 and 1955 respectively. In
these photos the roof of #5506 is red but the window frames are
black.
In the photo of #5509 both the roof and window frames are black. In
the case of the photo of #5509 the roof could have been obscured with
soot and red under the accumulated soot. As with most locomotives
you
should work from a photo of the era you are hoping to capture. Then
you will know what appliances the locomotivehad been outfitted with
during its lifetime. I would think that BLI was working from a photo
but then you never be certain. To paint the window frames black is a
minor fix for what is probably a pretty good runner with nice sound.
Later, Dave S.
