I was going to reply earlier but waited until others had answered. A number of
years ago my wife and I drove from Minneapolis to St. Louis in mid to late
October. The tree color was mostly gone at home and I figured that we would
pass thru a "band" of color as we drove south. What we found was that there was
color, and corn harvest, all the way. Going down, we drove mostly along the
Mississippi river using highway 61. It was a beautiful drive. In the portions
of the highway away from the river we saw lots of corn and soybeans and
harvesting equipment in the fields. I was less a RR buff then and did not
follow the tracks of the M&SL.
