The best I have is 7 of 13. It just strikes me as odd, with 30 cars,
you'd think at some point you'd come closer. As Steve said, I guess
that's what makes things fun.
You can obviously over analyze such things. I had thought that there
might be a good chance - at some point I'll make my wife compute the
odds for me, then perhaps I won't be quite as surprised (she's the
math major - she'll find THAT fun).
My concept was, that if I had 5 cars that could be renamed, I should
be able to easily make up 1 train, let alone the possibility of 2.
But, when you think of it, there are a lot of permutations. Given 6
baggage cars on the prototype and 2 in model, 18 dome coaches, 10 in
model, 6 dome lounges, 3 in model, 6 diners, 2 in model, 19 10-6s 8
in model, 6 16 sections, 2 models, 6 obs, 2 models. Pre- 1952 of
course. Even so there are still a few million combinations (or
more). I started it with the concept of creating a "typical"
consist, and though to get as close as possible. Said typical
consist would be used in a few places (web pages, presentation, article).
This sort of thing makes me wonder if the Walthers model is easier
(i.e. the buyer applies the name). The problem is the length of
plates. But that is an easier way of building a good EB
consist. Now to have the fun of assembling a 1960's era consist of
the Twin Cities Zephyr with the TCZ, EB & NCL all in the train. I
remember watching them go by from my bedroom in Riverside.
Perhaps, it's all just excellent research and marketing by BLI....
