I recall my grandparents milking when I was young. The cans had numbers in
red paint painted on the sides and on the lids, so they would get back to
the owner. I know I have seen cans with numbers stamped in the metal, or a
metal ID tag rivited to the can and lid. My grandma put the full cans in a
cooler, a chilled water bath (also great for watermelons in the summer), and
the milk truck picked them up. As they milked by hand it was not grade A and
the milk went to the cheese factory. Grandma did have a cream seperator, but
I don't recall if what they sold was seperated or not.

Bob Mahowski did a nice book a few years ago on the Ontario and Western's
milk trains, creameries, etc. Believe that is where I learned about sweet
cream vs sour cream.
