Apparently the tendency for the slag ballast to turn a dark, rusty color then 
comes from the run-off from the rusting rails, tie plates and spikes and other
hardware (as well as the equipment) rather than the ballast itself rusting.  I 
don't recall seeing any slag ballast being put down fresh or after it has been
through a cleaning train so don't know what it looks like brand new from the 
mills.
