Could I offer a guess why the two routes? In the time
I lived along the "Q", I know that a lot of out the
Streator branch to Chicago was the silica sand. My
guess is it went to users in the Chicago area or
furtherr eastbound via connections.
At some time the connections with the Kankakee Belt
(NYC) were important. The belt line around Chicago
was a big selling point. Why route that traffic back
toward the big city? Besides, didn't some of that
sand head west? What about the zinc mines? Did that
traffic need to go to Chicago?
