Rupert,

Have been watching this thread. Got me totally confused.
What is this "GM-6B" stuff? As to which gons had roofs that
could change rather frequently. For example some of the 833xx
cars had roofs put on for flat tinplate loading out of American
Can in Hammond. This did not turn out very well. Don't think
that American Can liked it. They were also very difficult to
inspect and monitor. Think they were trying to use crossbars
for load securement and it did not work. They had already been
using 47xxx series cars with a floating loading plan that could
be handled with forklifts. Customer wanted to move more tonnage
but the gons did not work out. Instead they got 103xx series
cars, not for their size, but for the higher load limit. What
happened to the roofed cars? Probably rolled over to Inland or
Granite City Steel. Inland at least was not very careful as to
putting roofs back on and I think a few were lost there.

With the advent of purpose built coil cars the covered gons
started losing roofs as the Customers no longer needed them.

Since the roofs were not a structural part of the car they were
more of a Marketing tool than anything to do with car design.

  Rick

83526 is a GM-6B built in 1967-8 at Havelock as part of 83500-83599.
However, according to the ORER's, this group didn't have removable roofs!
