The Hobby Shop in question here is called Sir Jim's Hobbies. I have been in
there several times and (except for the cigarette smoke - lol) have been quite
happy with the service. Jim will personally order anything I ask of him and he
has always come through with exceptional pricing. Frankly, I get better service
from him than I do at any of the places here in Omaha. He always gives me my
Lionel Catalogs free instead of being dinged $5 like the Omaha hobby shops do.
And he sells stuff cheap! I always try to patronize him every time I go by
there.
It's true that he is in a U.P. town, and it's only natural that he would cater
to U.P. clientele. In fact, he said that U.P. recently bought over 50 Athearn
locomotives from him for purposes of training people in Bailey Yard. So who can
blame him?? But if I wanted anything Q, I have no doubts that he would get if
for me.
The fact that he also sells guns should not stop you from wanting to shop
there. Can't a person have two hobbies at the same time? Jim just happens to
be an expert in both. I applaud his ability to cater to two completely
different and diverse hobbies. In fact, out in that part of the state, you just
about have to in order to make a living. If it wasn't for the guns, North
Platte (and Western Nebraska, for that matter) probably wouldn't even have a
model train shop. Something to think about before you completely write off this
legitimate businessman and model railroader.
So if you happen to be out that way, patronize Sir Jim's all you can and he will
do the same for you. I have never regretted going in there, even if I don't buy
anything -- it's always been a pleasure.
