The model must be clean as clean as a pin. You can strip a prior finish. But the end result must be a part to plate that has no fingerprints, dust, oil, or sanding marks. Otherwise, it will be forever preserved for posterity. An undecorated shell or part is the best.

If you have an unpainted shell washed in Dawn (rinsed in distilled water if you have bad water) you will be fine. Even water marks will be plated in detail. Handle with gloves after washing.

The plater airbrushes a very fine coat of an electrically conductive lacquer on the shell. It is so fine that it will cover a fingerprint without destroying it.

Re: Alclad II. I would agree with comments to use Floquil Crystal Cote or Future Floor Coating as an intermediate barrier and will protect the metal finish. Neither will affect plastic or the Alclad
