Per Ken Martin's info:
Apparently those 48500 series had their end doors removed later when RR's
lost auto traffic to truckers - I looked at OER's initially in the 60's but
see in my 7-59 OER that indeed the 48500 series had a door with a 9'4" wide
& 10'1" high opening; other series with end doors at the time included
7000-7189 - wood 40'; the 20500-20509 - steel 50';
40000-40013/40125-40149/46650-46749/47000-47189 - wood 50'; & lastly
48500-48599 - steel 50'. I don't recall seeing any of the steel box cars
with end doors in MoW service but did see the wood ones as they were
convenient for carrying some wheeled equipment. Saw my last one in E. Dbq
in BN MoW service in late 70's. Ken's a good enough modeler that he
probably has a Q end-door box with opening end door! Gerald
