List, The following information was taken from the book THE JOE LINE
by Kent Hannah who is a dispatcher for the BNSF. There were seven
brothers from Hunnewell, Mo. on the old Hannibal and St. Joseph
Railroad line. They all worked for the railroad. The oldest was
William Francis Thiehoff, born June 25, 1866 and died March 20,
1953. He entered service on the H&StJ in 1883 and served as a
section laborer, telegraph operator, freight brakeman, freight and
passenger conductor, train master, assistant superintendent, general
superintendent, assistant general manager, and general manager for
both lines east and west of the CB&Q. The second was Joseph Milton
Thiehoff, born Feb. 19, 1868 and died Jan. 18, 1934, a Brookfield
Division engineer. The third was Samuel Barnard Thiehoff born Jan.
16, 1870 and died Aug. 14, 1945 and was the agent at Monroe City,
Mo. He started as an operator on May 23, 1889 and worked until the
mid 1930's. James Richard Thiehoff was the fourth brother, born on
Dec. 10, 1871 and died Jan. 19, 1950 at Portland, Oregon. He worked
as a brakeman at Brookfield and ended his days on the SP&S Ry where
he retired as a passenger conductor. The fifth, Phillip Yancey, was
born on Jan. 2, 1876 and died Jan. 25, 1933. He was a brakeman and
operator for the CB&Q and later worked as ayardmaster at North St
Louis, Mo. on the CB&Q. The sisth, Charles Sylvester, was born
Apr.10, 1880. He started as a brakeman at Brookfield and later hired
out on the Santa Fe working out of Ft. Madison, Iowa. He was working
as a passenger conductor on the Santa Fe in 1937. The last brother
was Albert Augustus Thiehoff (Bert) who worked as an operator at
various places on the CB&Q(relay dept) and retired as the chief
dispatcher at Creston, Iowa. He was born May 10, 1883 and died
Sept.23, 1954. Both daughters of the family married railroaders.
The depot at Hunnewell has been moved off the right of way and is
usaed as the Thiehoff Memorial meeting hall in Hunnewell. Whew!!!
